Broad Peak Expedition Overview
Broad Peak, rising to 8,051 meters (26,414 feet), is located in Pakistan’s Karakoram Range in the
northeastern region of the country. It is the 12th tallest mountain globally and sits along the western side
of the Baltoro Glacier, nestled between K2 and Gasherbrum IV.
The first successful ascent of Broad Peak was made in 1957 by a small Austrian team consisting of Marcus
Schmuck, Fritz Wintersteller, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl—all of whom reached the summit. This
achievement marked Broad Peak as the eleventh of the world’s fourteen 8,000-meter peaks to be climbed.
Among the world’s highest peaks, Broad Peak is considered relatively accessible for climbers. Despite its
height above 8,000 meters, it is regarded as one of the easier 8,000-meter mountains to summit. Many
international mountaineers use it as a training climb before attempting more challenging peaks such as K2. One
advantage for climbers is the close proximity of Broad Peak’s base camp to that of K2—only about a 90-minute
journey separates them.
