K2 Peak Expedition Overview
K2, also known as Chogori, is the world’s second-highest mountain, standing at 8,611 meters. It is the
tallest peak in Pakistan and forms part of the Karakoram Range. Geographically, K2 is situated on the border
between Baltistan in Gilgit–Baltistan, Pakistan, and the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County in Xinjiang, China.
The mountain was first successfully climbed in 1954. The expedition consisted of 11 climbers, 500 porters, and
6 scientists. One climber lost his life to pneumonia after enduring a severe 40-day storm. The final ascent
was carried out by two climbers without oxygen, and they had to descend in complete darkness.
The name “K2” comes from its survey label—“K” stands for Karakoram, and “2” indicates that it was the second
peak recorded in the range. This name was given by British surveyor T.G. Montgomery in 1856. In the local
Balti language, spoken in Skardu and nearby areas, the mountain is called “Ketu.”
In 1954, an important summit was held regarding K2. The Italian team reported the height of the mountain as
8,611 meters, a measurement later confirmed by climbers Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni upon reaching
the top with sufficient oxygen. Numerous legends once surrounded K2, but many were clarified by the renowned
climber Walter Bonatti. His accounts in The Mountains of My Life and Trial on K2 provided clear insights into
the challenges and history of K2.
