Hunting the Astor Markhor follows the traditional spot-and-stalk method common to high-altitude mountain hunts. Early mornings are often the best time to spot these elusive animals, as they are most active during that part of the day. Hunters use binoculars or spotting scopes to locate a mature male and then plan a cautious approach to get within shooting range. Since mountain wildlife rarely anticipates threats from higher ground, the approach often involves a lengthy and strenuous detour to gain elevation and close in from above and downwind. In the early stages of regulated hunting, some hunters noted that while local guides were deeply familiar with the terrain and animal behavior, they lacked experience in evaluating trophies. Over time, this issue has significantly improved, with guides now much better equipped to assist with successful and ethical hunts.
