Rakaposhi Peak Expedition Overview
Rakaposhi is one of the most iconic and prominent peaks in the valley, renowned for its grandeur and
visibility from all directions. Towering above the landscape, it remains in constant view along the Karakoram
Highway and offers a breathtaking panorama from Hunza—truly a sight that words can hardly capture. The
mountain’s ever-present glacier adds a layer of natural wonder to the already stunning beauty of the region.
The peak first drew the attention of explorers in 1892, when Martin Conway attempted to find a route, although
he was unable to reach the summit. The first successful ascent came on June 25, 1958, when a joint
British-Pakistani team, including Mike Banks and Tom Patey of the UK, reached the top. Later, on August 2,
1979, Eiho Ohtani and Matsushi Yamashita of Waseda University, Japan, successfully climbed the North Spur
route.
