Gasherbrum IV Peak Expedition Overview
Gasherbrum IV (K4) is the 17th highest mountain in the world and the 6th tallest in Pakistan. It belongs to
the Gasherbrum group, a remote cluster of peaks situated at the northeastern edge of the Baltoro Glacier in
the Karakoram range of the greater Himalayas. The massif includes three of the world’s peaks that rise above
8,000 meters.
The name "Gasherbrum" is often mistakenly believed to mean "Shining Wall," in reference to the striking west
face of Gasherbrum IV. However, the name is derived from the Balti language—“Rgasha” meaning “beautiful” and
“brum” meaning “mountain,” making the accurate translation “beautiful mountain.”
The mountain’s first successful ascent was achieved in 1958 by an Italian expedition, with climbers Walter
Bonatti and Carlo Mauri reaching the summit via the north ridge. Later, in 1985, Robert Schauer from Austria
and Wojciech Kurtyka from Poland completed the first climb of the formidable 3,000-meter-high west face.
Despite facing severe weather and exhaustion, they reached the north summit but were unable to continue to the
main peak.
Gasherbrum IV's Base Camp is located near that of Broad Peak, making it part of a key mountaineering region in
the Karakoram.
